Ye Olde Summonable Flying Mount Question

So, paladins and locks have a special place among the denizens of Azeroth - questable mounts. Now, it should be noted that much a do has been made about the epic riding mount being free for a lock. Clearly, not all have actually quested theirs. While it is cheaper, it surely is not free. So, all us locks, with our cool flaming horses get to outland for the first time, we ding 70 and are ready to learn our epic flying summon.

"Excuse me, Mr. scary gnome who hangs out in this house in a cavern in Ironforge, could you teach me how to summon something that flies?"

"Doesn't your succubus have wings?"

"Yeah, but I think even given her garb, she's not a mount."

"Oh... hey, wait, you even have the S3 helm.. That has wings, surely you can fly into the night sky on wings of pure evil, powered by the bones of your enemies or something like that, can't you?"

"Hmmm, I don't actually think I can... Now in all fairness, I haven't tried jumping off something high when the wings deploy, so for all I know, they could actually work!"

"Oh... good. Go try that."

***

So I know that this is a long debated and worn out issue, but I still, obviously as a warlock would love to see some kind of summonable flying mount. I do support the dr00ds getting a flying form... that totally makes sense. I'm not sure I really like the idea that they get it at 68, but I've come to peace with that too as payment for not getting to see their armor in any representable way on their toons when they shapeshift. That's lame.

Is the reason that we don't have a flying demon because there aren't any in the game? That doesn't seem right... I feel like I've seen plenty of things that look like they have wings and are definitely demonic. Surely there must be something to be done. At the very least, the S3 helm should allow us to slow fall if we time it right. Clearly that makes sense at least. I mean... think of all the work our necks are doing on our behalf just keeping that thing up. Give it a reason!

You broke my seduce!

...sounds like a personal problem.

Well, in some ways it is. This has happened to all of us, in all of our crowd controlling capacities. Inevitably, at some point, someone will have the wrong mob targeted and do something to it they shouldn't if that mob is supposed to be CCed. In good cases, they only whacked it with something, or shot a spell at it, or hit it with a multi-shot or something. However, sometimes you'll get the bane of the CC, the DOT placed on something and then what do you do? Well, let's see.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it... but what if it is?

Option 1) Somebody whacked the mob you were seducing and has now stopped doing damage to it. Solution: Re-seduce. There is no reason, if they have figured out the error of their ways that you can't just take that couple of extra seconds and re-seduce the target. No real harm done.

Option 2) Somebody whacked the mob you were seducing, and continues to whack the mob you were planning on seducing. Solution: Try to tell them to stop, then re-seduce. If you are working over vent or voice chat, and there is no DOT or bleed effect or something nasty like that up on the mob, then by all means, say, "Hey tank, that's the seduce mob." Hopefully, they'll hear you and move on to the mob they were supposed to be attacking.

And what if they don't... well, then you have to figure out what makes the most sense. Maybe your party leader will jump in and say something like, "Switch focus fire to purple diamond and seduce circle". Something handy like that. Then, everyone will know how to fix the problem. Maybe your party leader will say, "Oh hell, WTF OMG BBQ?!?!?" Okay... then do what you think is best... good luck.

Option 3) Somebody whacked the mob you were seducing and placed a bleed effect or DOT on the damn thing. Solution: Well crap! You will not be able to re-seduce that mob until that DOT has ticked its way to oblivion. So, you have a couple of things you could do.

Solution 1) You can use some other form of CC on the mob. Can you enslave or banish the mob? (No, not if you were seducing it in the first place you couldn't). Oh, then what? Fear yo-yo. DOT's and bleed effects can tick away all they want while you fear kite the mob around. But be careful! If your mob is position poorly to fear kite it, try to get it attracted to you through a nice searing pain or the like and once you have it well positioned, fear bomb that bad boy. Curse of Shadow and Fear are your combo of choice here. (We'll fully discuss fear kiting in instances in another post, promise).

Solution 2) Switch targets. Your party leader changes the strat and you seduce something else. If you are really quick, you might even be able to seduce something before everything goes to hell and save some of the trouble. (Of course, that only works if people are paying attention to what has hearts above its head and what doesn't).

Option 4) Somebody whacked the mob you were seducing and now it likes them more and has walked into an AOE. Solution: Gain agro, pull, re-seduce. If all that is damaging the beastie is an AOE, searing pain that bad boy until it likes you and get it to come visit you outside of the AOE. You can seduce as soon as it's clear of damage and you'll be good to go.

Part of being a good player, is not just following the plan, but knowing what to do if the plan gets screwed up. Be ready for what you are supposed to do, but also ready for what you can do should something go wrong. You might be a hero!

How to Warlock!

Okay. For all of those who had somehow missed this fascinating post, you must go check it out. Thank you to Ratshag at Need More Rage for the link in the first place.

You do not meet minimum system requirements

I play wow on a laptop, like many people. But unlike many people, my laptop is an Ibook G4. I have a respectable amount of RAM but no real intense graphic card to speak of and certainly not the required amount of Video RAM to play the game.

Before I added the extra ram to the computer, I was trying to play with the computer as it was, out of the box. I remember the first time that I flew into Ironforge and my computer showed the image of a gryphon... for 4 minutes, and then shut off. That was really fantastic. I remember thinking at that time, I should probably buy some ram. Fortunately a friend of mine, who also had a mac, had some spare ram that would fit my machine since he had just gotten more and better ram for his. Hooray for increased performance: and I've been able to play the game ever since.

I was really concerned when Blizzard was about to release TBC, because I fretted over whether the minimum system requirements would rise and therefore I would no longer be able to play with my computer. The TBC zones definitely tax the machine more than the azerothian world, with their large landscapes, fixtures and expansive views. Blades edge mountains are particularly silly on my computer as you can't really see what's going on at all with all the stupid spikes sticking up all over the place. As I fly around that zone, I am VERY likely to run into a spike because the area is rendering slower than I am moving.

With the coming of WRATH, I wonder again... will I finally have to retire my trusty laptop. And if so, what direction should I go? I've long thought that while I love MACs, since my wife and I both have one, they certainly are more expensive than a similarly geared PC. I could easily get a desktop that would run the game at a mediocre to good level without spending that much money. And of course, if I'm used to rolling with 16MB of VRAM, you know almost anything would be an improvement.

Another good question, is how much has the lack of performance ability of my computer hurt my performance in the game. The most obvious places I notice problems are in PvP. Large numbers of player characters make me sluggish, getting down to 4-8 fps and that can't be helpful for my uber OP pwnage, right?

I can blame my lack of success in PvP on the hardware, right?

So what we can't sheep... SEDUCE!

The mage's polymorph, it's true, is THE crowd control option. Reliable, applicable to many different kinds of mobs, but it's basically all the mage has. (Besides applications of mage tanking, etc...) Hunters can trap of course, and can really chain trap quite effectively if they've practiced and know what they're doing. Priests of course can shackle, pallys can AOE tank, warriors can... er, hit things and Druids can spin people in the air with the power of wind. (neat). Rogues can SAP and shamman, well, I'm not sure what they do, but I'm sure they do something.

Warlocks though, what crowd control options to they have available to them. Seducing, Enslaving, Banishing and Fear Yo-Yoing, that's what. While the types of the mobs they have control over is somewhat limited, there are so many different types of CC that a warlock can offer up, that they can be an invaluable member of a party, in ways that go beyond being the stone vendor. Let's take a look at the goodie bag of warlock crowd control options and how to use each effectively.

Seduction

True, to use seduction, you do have to pull out the Succubus. So, because Blizzard seems to refuse to allow us to turn of the emotes for our pets, means that you are subjected to the whip-cracking, ass-smacking sounds of our hot-pants demoness. However, she's a useful little demon for taking on humanoids, provided you set yourself up for success.

Much has been said, (if nothing else by me and my guild mates), about the lack of reliability of a seduce. It is true that it tends to break often, the succubus is a weak little pansy of a demon in terms of health points and armor, and so if the mob gets free and starts hacking on her, she'll go down quicker than... well, insert the improper metaphor of your choice. Here's the tools you need to make this work:

1) Quartz, DOTimer or some similar cooldown/cast bar addon that will show you a) whether your seduce is still active, and b) how long it will remain so if it doesn't break early. I really like Quartz because it will show me my focus target even while I continue to DPS on the current burndown. While I mash CoA, Immolate, Corr, Siphon Life, UA and SB over and over again with an occasional life tap in between, I'm able to always keep an eye on that seduction timer at the bottom of my cast bar to make sure it is still there so I can reseduce the moment it goes away if that is needed.

2) A succubus. Duh. Though, I'd take the improved one actually. This talent improves "the effect of the Warlock's Succubus's Lash of Pain and Soothing Kiss spells by 30%, and increases the duration of her Seduction and Lesser Invisibility spells by 30%." [wowwiki.com] I really found a pretty noticable increase in the effectiveness of the succubus by specing this way, though I'd also say a lot of warlocks would probably feel like it's a waste of points that they'd rather put into another tree. As an affliction lock myself, a lot of other locks would probably go the route of putting more points into destruction and skipping the imp. succ, but I really find a great usefullness in it. There are CERTAINLY advantages to specing this talent in a pvp setting. Oh the invisible love that comes and smacks the unsuspecting opponent upside the head.

3) A good focus macro for your sucky. I use this one:
/clearfocus [modifier:alt]
/focus [target=focus,noexists]; [target=focus,dead]
/clearfocus [target=focus,help]
/petstay
/petfollow
/stopcasting
/cast [pet:succubus,target=focus,exists,harm] Seduction; Seduction

This macro does a couple of fantastic things. First of all, if you hold down alt, you clear your focus. This eliminates the need for a separate macro just for that function. Second, it sets the current target as focus, if there isn't one already, or if the previous focus has died. Finally, it casts seduction on the target if you have a succubus out.

Personally, I put this on one of my action bars and bound it to the ctrl-~ key and love it. I'm able to quickly seduce something or reseduce my previous target without much problem. I also have another simple macro button that I made which sets my focus to a new target in case the attack plan changes midstream:
/focus
Seriously, that's all there is to that macro. Just target the thing you want your new focus to be and click your button or do like I do, map it to a key combo. I use shift-v.

Now, how to use them all together:

Step one - Mark the target. Your raid/party leader marks the target to seduce. This is important because it assumes that your leader knows that you have the succubus out for this reason and is intending you to use it. Plus, the party should now be aware of the seduced target as well. All good.

Step two - Focus the target. I have taken to doing this prior to the pull as of late so that I can continue to look at other mobs, click on myself for whatever reason, or go ahead and target the first target in the kill order. If you are using the above macro, you don't have to focus first. I just like setting my focus ahead for my own comfort. (Especially if I'll be needing to crowd control in another way as well).

Step three - Wait for it... It is probably not your job to pull, and if it is, it probably shouldn't be. If you have a hunter in your party and they aren't pulling... why not? They are made for it. If you are pulling and not the tank... really? Warlocks have lots of function, but in general, they really shouldn't be pulling, so wait for the pull so that you don't agro all of the mobs yourself and take a quick trip to squishy heaven.

Step four - Pop your macro. Hit your key binding for your macro, preferably early enough that the seduced target will be away from the main fight, yet still in your view. Now watch that focus section of your cast bar, or your focused unit frame, or whatever indicator you have to know that you currently have a seduced target. Even if it is just the visual confirmation of the hearts over the head. You do not need to worry about getting to DPS right away. Your first and most important task in this kind of pull will be to make sure that your crowd control worked! So, if it got resisted, didn't happen for some reason, try again until that mob is in love.

Step four (b) - Curse of Shadow. You can also throw this down on the mob. You can even cast at the same time as the seduce since they share separate cooldowns. This way, your seduction will be less likely to break. That's a good thing!

Step five - Do whatever it is you are supposed to do next. DPS the main target, crowd control the next mob, something. Whatever it is you are supposed to be doing, get to it. But, keep an eye on your seduced target so that you can reseduce if it hasn't made it's way to the top of the kill order by the time the CC breaks.

Once your mob is ready to be taken down, let that succubus wail on it or just let her come back to your side as you add your ranged DPS to the party.

A couple of last pointers, you need to watch your succubus, because while it is a really effective tool, it tends to die on you if it gets wacked by something, so have those reseduces ready to go, and if at all possible, have your mob that you're seducing agroed on you, not the succy since the succy won't last but a couple hits against most mobs. Hopefully, if you are any kind of warlock worth your salt, you will last more than a couple of hits.

Mages are like warlocks that like kittens

So, my first and main character is Rahrnok, as shown in the side bar. He's a warlock, and he's ugly. I even felt the need, that even though I don't REALLY do PvP, I just had to have the s3 winged helm thing because it's so scary, and warlocky. (that's a word? I'm going with it).

I leveled my warlock as a destro lock, basically modeling him as a fire mage wanna-be with a pet from the darkness that I could summon. I finally switched to what the other 58% of warlocks at level 70 have realized is best, Affliction, and I really do like it. I enjoy watching the number of debuffs I can put up on a target and like watching red numbers scroll over my target as happy, friendly green ones pop up over my heavily weighted down head.

However... all of that focus on destro for so long should have tipped us all off to something... I wanted to play a mage. So, especially since the leveling speed increase, I've been focusing on getting my other caster up to end game land. Naranan is a pretty, female mage who, funny enough, is not specced fire. (Frost Mage Tank FTW). Okay, she doesn't really tank, just grabs agro too often. I've been so depressed to see the amount of DPS I can do, especially when I pop my water elemental.

Aside: I really was avoiding talenting the water elemental for a long time because, as you know, I had a lock... so why would I want a pet with my mage. I already have a class that has a pet to deal with and had already bound away those key bindings for pets to other more useful action bar locations... I was really pretty committed to going petless. However, the lure of the +300 DPS for 45 sec. and the speed at which I just recently powered through the bloodspire ogres in Blades Edge has completely convinced me that the summon water elemental talent is almost as cool as Ice Lance. (Triple damage against frozen targets... sweetz!)

So, in any event... My mage is creeping up on my lock, and now I'll have two high level squishies to rain down fire and ice and shadow destruction from a far. Only one likes kittens, and one eats them... Or siphons their souls and turns them into crystal. Oh, warlocks.

Really?

My two observations about the creation of this blog are thus:

1) Really? No one else already has this blog name? I really would have thought someone would have already taken this. This is just proof of the lack of warlock blogs out there. All the ranting about us being OP has driven us underground, scared to share our feelings. So sad.

2) The template... I know it's awfully cheery, and we usually associate warlocks with evil, caranage and hate. But, they are dots! DOTs! ha... *eghm*

Okay, bad joke, but I didn't want to just use the normal blogger template that everyone uses. (minima, or whatever it is that's white and simple... or the black version either).

So there it is. Warlock blog ho!
